Dakshinachitra is an amazing cross culture living museum of art,architecture, lifestyles, crafts and performing arts of the south India. The main goal is to attribute, preserve, and to promote the aspects of the broader and the varied cultures of the state and bringing all these things to public's concern in the enjoyable and lively manner.
Dakshinachitra is a heritage museum, founded by an NGO called Madras Craft Foundation in 14 December 1996. This is situated sore above the bay of Bengal, at Muttukadu, 25kms South of Central Chennai. It is a collection of 18 genuine historical houses with the relating demonstration of each house. All the houses which is in Dakshinachitra was given to demolition by their owners. These houses are been reconstructed by artisans (Stapathi) of the places where the house were bought.
There are houses which represent eacj and every state . First in Tamil Nadu's culture there are varieties of houses. Like, Tamil Nadu Merchant house, it is from a house in Kandanur village, Ramnad district. Brahmin house is from Ambur village, Tirunelveli district. Silk weavers house is from Chinna Kanchipuram. Agricultural house is from Sathanur village, Mayavaram district.
If we take Kerala's houses, we can see Syrian Christian House, from Puthupally, Kottayam district. Hindu house from Mankavu, Calicut. Again Hindu House, Trivandrum. And finally Granary Kuttattukulam, Kottayam district.
Then Karnataka, The chikmagalur House,from Chikmagalur district, which shows the Muslim heritage of Karnataka. And Ilkal Weaver House from Ilkal, Bagalkote district.
And finally we could see the culture of Andrapradesh. Here we could see the Coastal Andra House from Yellamanchilli Mandal, Visakhapatnam district. Ikat House from Nalgonda district is also a Weaver's house.
Dakshinachitra, not only gives the idea about various cultures but also makes us to feel it. In Potter's House we can see the Potters who were doing some pottery works and the teach us how to make the pot. Likewise they may celebrate some carnivals also
