The scenic locale of Arikamedu is a tourist haven which is about 4 km from Puducherry.
It is a place with historical relevance as the Romans traded here. An important trade hub frequented by the Romans, there are evidences highlighting the presence of Romans. Coins, ceramics and other material show the Roman connection.
This place was excavated many times and it is believed that people were involved in making beads which was their occupation besides fishing. Wine was imported those days and textiles, glass were also brought from outside. Chola coins were found during excavations.
Perpendicular walls and tiny houses speak eloquently about the greatness of Arikamedu. Mention about Arikamedu is found in Tamil and Roman literature.
Now we take a plunge at the Ariyankuppam river which empties at Veerapattinam beach. Cruising along the river is exhilarating and rejuvenating. We can also catch a glimpse of the lighthouse and enjoy the cool fresh air. Mango and coconut tress add to the verdant landscape and sauntering here takes us closer to Nature. The caressing winds kiss our faces and we are unable to come out of the natural bounty that is Arikamedu.
