The strange and haunting DrGuislain Museum in Ghent occupies the 19th-century psychiatric institution founded by DrJozefGuislain. Here, the visitors can wander through chilling deserted wards still furnished with iron beds and old medical equipment.

One of the room’s still contains a terrifying mechanical saw used in operations to remove the top of the skull! In this wonderful oasis you will find a permanent collection that illustrates the history of psychiatry and an international collection of outsider art or art brut. The temporary exhibitions are also always worth visiting.

The unique exhibitions play a pioneering role in questioning and removing misunderstandings and prejudice with regards to brain disorders. The collections call into question the border between the normal and the abnormal, point out the social and cultural aspects of mental healthcare and it shed light on neuro scientific developments.
