Lord Kallazhagar enters Vaigai

he Chithirai Thiruvizha of Goddess Meenakshi Amman in Madurai reached a crescendo when the renowned event of lord Kallazhagar entering river Vaigai, which runs across the temple town, was held this morning.

It was a grand spectacle when lord Kallazhagar, the presiding deity of Kallazhagar Kovil, lying north-east of Madurai, came from his abode dressed in green silk, mounted on a golden horse (thanga kudhirai vahanam) in a galloping posture.

People from far-off places occupied the north and south riverbeds to get a glimpse of the deity.

The sea of humanity surged towards the deity when he entered the Vaigai amidst chanting of hymns and music from nagaswarams, giving a festive flavour.

It is believed that Kallazhagar comes to Madurai to witness the celestial wedding of his sister Meenakshi to lord Sundareswarar. When he comes to know that the marriage is over, he leaves in haste in anger. He goes straightaway to Vandiyur.

Thousands of people from all parts of Madurai and Tamil Nadu had converged to witness the celestial event.

This fest unifies people of all religions and they participate with a sense of togetherness as the ethnic art forms are showcased as a part of the festivities.
